FC Zurich Wins Cup Match against FC Stade Lausanne Ouchy 3-2

Thanks to two late goals, FC Zurich has won the match against FC Stade Lausanne Ouchy (playing in Switzerland’s fifth highest league) 3-2 this afternoon and is through to the round of 16 of the Swiss cup. Before kick-off, the Super League team from Zurich was the odds-on favorite, but the home side from Lausanne proved to be a very tenacious opponent and didn’t make life easy for the visiting team of head coach Urs Meier.

With two late goals scored during the final 15 minutes of regular time, Marco Schönbächler and Franck Etoundi were responsible for the fact that FC Zurich got to celebrate a victory today. Up to the 74th minute, FC Stade Lausanne Ouchy was 2-1 ahead, and many a FC Zurich supporter was probably already expecting the worst for his club. After Mario Gavranovic had equalized the score (1-1) just a few minutes after the halftime break, careless and sloppy defending on FC Zurich’s part led to some good scoring opportunities for the home side – but fortunately enough, the team from Lausanne was not able to convert any of them.

The matches of the next round of the Swiss cup were drawn on Monday: FC Zurich will be facing FC Baden on 9 or 10 November 2013.
