FC Zurich Announces New Technical Director and Head Coach
FC Zurich’s Board of Directors has made two important personnel decisions.
A few months ago already, FC Zurich decided to reorganize and strategically realign its football section. The former position of General Manager will be eliminated; instead, the new function of a “Technical Director“ will be created. The Technical Director will be responsible for the strategic and operative leadership of FC Zurich’s entire football section.
The Board of Directors has appointed Marco Bernet (54) as Technical Director. Marco Bernet, who has been with the club for 10 years and who was both a football player and a coach, has also been involved in establishing and developing the FC Zurich Academy’s education program. In recent years, he’s been in charge of FC Zurich’s “LetziKids“ section, which has been very successful and which is renowned all over Europe. In addition, he’s been internally responsible for “Footeco”, a project for U12 and U13 teams organized by the Swiss Football Association (SFV). Further, he’s also been advising other football clubs and coaches and has been in charge of FC Zurich’s various partnership programs. In the past, he used to work for FIFA in various capacities and participated in several World Cups as a member of the association’s Technical Study Group (administration technical report).
The Board of Directors has confirmed Urs Meier (51) as the first team’s Head Coach. The former U21 coach assumes responsibility for the first team with immediate effect.
Urs Meier has been with FC Zurich since the summer of 2005. Overall, he was in charge of the U18 and the U21 teams for 4 years each. During the past 1st League season, the U21 team, led by Urs Meier, got promoted to the newly established 1st League Promotion. Both in 2008 and 2012, the 51-year-old won the prestigious Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup with FC Zurich’s U21 team.
Urs Meier holds the UEFA Pro License and had a successful career as a professional football player (Grasshopper Club Zurich, SC Zug, FC Schaffhausen, AC Bellinzona). Furthermore, he’s a very experienced football coach: He began his coaching career as Christian Gross’s assistant coach with Grasshopper Club Zurich. Some of his other assignments include positions with the clubs of Altstetten/Zurich, Thun (Technical Director), Baden, Solothurn and Winterthur. Between 2006 and 2010, FC Zurich’s new Head Coach also gained international experience as both interim Head Coach and Assistant Coach of Liechtenstein’s national team.
We wish Urs Meier and Marco Bernet the best of luck and a lot of success in their new capacities.
