FC Zurich Beats Servette FC with 2:1

FC Zurich has won its Super League away game this evening against Servette FC with 2:1.

Today’s fixture offered 90 minutes of exciting football, although the two teams did not yet get into full swing during the first half. Oliver Buff missed the first opportunity in the 8th minute when he found himself in a good position in front of the Servette goal after a pass by Chikhaoui. The team from Geneva then made life difficult for the FC Zurich players, but they did not manage to create any dangerous and promising scoring opportunities for themselves – clear-cut chances remained scarce for most of the first 45 minutes.

FC Zurich got into the game a little better during the second half. After an attack launched by Chikhaoui and Schönbächler, Chermiti slid the ball over the line in the 63rd minute for the well-deserved 1:0 lead. But a mere ten minutes later, a shot from short range struck Zurich defender Raphael Koch on the arm and referee Jaccottet awarded Servette FC penalty – a highly disputed decision. Goran Karanovic converted from the spot in the 73rd minute and tied the score at 1:1.

At the end of the day, it was still FC Zurich who got to celebrate: After a well-timed pass from Chikhaoui, Adis Jahovic lobbed the ball over Servette keeper Barroca and then headed the ball into the net to put his team back in the lead. But the match was not just finished yet. The game was already into added time, when Pont put the ball into the FC Zurich goal and the crowd in the stadium thought that Servette FC had equalized again. However, the referee disallowed this goal because of a foul on FC Zurich defender Raphael Koch.

FC Zurich will be playing their next Super League home game against FC St Gallen on March 30th 2013 at the Letzigrund Stadium.
