FC Zurich Suffers 1:3 Defeat against FC St Gallen

After an extremely successful start to the second half of the season with no defeat in 2013 so far, FC Zurich has suffered a 1:3 loss against FC St. Gallen tonight.

The home side tried to get control of the game right after kick-off and, just a few minutes into the match, Chikhaoui hit the side-netting and missed the first opportunity to put his team 1:0 ahead. The visitors from St. Gallen now gained more momentum and launched several dangerous attacks on the Zurich goal; but to no avail - the match remained goalless until the halftime whistle.

During the first 15 minutes of the second half, the two teams neutralized each other and clear-cut scoring opportunities were scarce. In the 63rd minute, however, Wüthrich spooned the ball past Zurich goalkeeper Da Costa and opened the score with the 0:1 lead for the visitors. The host team aimed to score the immediate equalizer – but they exposed their defense too much and were vulnerable to attacks. It was therefore only logical that Scarione scored unchallenged after a FC St Gallen counterattack (66th minute) and increased the host team’s lead to 0:2. But FC Zurich did not give up just yet: After a corner (73rd minute), the ball dropped in front of FC Zurich defender Raphael Koch and he volleyed the ball into the net to put his team on the scoreboard and reduce St Gallen’s lead to just one goal. FC Zurich’s players now realized that anything was still possible for them and they kept pushing for the equalizer. But instead, FC St Gallen converted another of their counterattacks against the now completely exposed FC Zurich defense and scored the game-deciding 1:3.

Next Saturday, FC Zurich will be facing local rivals Grasshoppers in their next Super League home game.
