FC Zurich Suffers another Defeat – 1:3 versus FC Basel

FC Zurich has suffered another defeat this afternoon against FC Basel (1:3) and has lost its third game in a row.

Clear-cut scoring opportunities were scarce during the first 20 minutes of today’s encounter in Basel. FC Zurich striker Drmic, however, again and again managed to shake up Basel’s defense with his rushes and, in the 25th minute, provided further proof of his talent and technique: he sprinted past Basel defender Fabian Schär, dribbled goalkeeper Sommer and tucked away the ball from an acute angle. This lead spurred FC Zurich on, and the team now had its strongest period: Kukuruzovic missed an opportunity after 33 minutes and, just a few minutes later, Tunisian striker Chermiti hit the crossbar.

After the half-time break, FC Zurich was struggling to get back into the match and let the host team push them too far back into their own defense. And although FC Basel still didn’t have many chances to get onto the scoreboard, they still got the equalizer: in his last professional match, Alex Frei banged a free kick into the top corner of the net and put his team on even terms.

The game was going on 90 minutes and seemed be ending in a draw. But after a foul by Béda on Stocker, the Austrian referee awarded FC Basel a penalty, which Schär converted. FC Zurich now took a lot of risks to find the equalizer and neglected the defense. It was therefore only logical that Salah took advantage and scored the game-deciding 1:3 just two minutes later.

FC Zurich will be facing local rivals Grasshopper Club in the cup semi-finals next Wednesday.
