At Long Last: FC Zurich Wins Home Game against FC Basel 3:1

FC Zurich beat FC Basel 3:1 tonight and has won its first home game against the reigning Swiss champions in over six years.

In the 8th minute of tonight’s encounter already, Valentin Stocker put FC Basel into the lead. FC Zurich also had several promising scoring opportunities in the first half, but didn’t convert any of them. During the halftime break, however, FC Zurich head coach Urs Meier must have had the right words: the home team got back onto the pitch and now showed the efficiency they had been lacking during the first half. In the 69th minute, Gajic scored the well-deserved equalizer and, shortly before the final whistle, Schönbächler even put his side 2:1 ahead. The match had already gone into stoppage time when Pedro Henrique ultimately decided the match with his 3:1 into the empty goal - FC Basel keeper Sommer had abandoned his position and sprinted to FC Zurich’s penalty box for a Basel free kick in a last and desperate attempt to get the equalizer.

Tonight’s victory consolidates FC Zurich’s hope to finish this Super League season in 5th place and qualify for the Europa League. Next Sunday, FC Zurich will be facing Grasshopper Club Zurich in its next home game.
