FC Zurich has finished the 2012/13 season with a defeat: At the Stade de Tourbillon, the team of head coach Urs Meier has suffered a 2:4 loss against FC Sion. Quite a few FC Zurich players were not on the squad tonight – among them Amine Chermiti and Yassine Chikhaoui (national team Tunisia), Marco Schönbächler (suspended), David Da Costa (birth of his first child) and Oliver Buff (injured). Although these absences were surely not the main reason for the defeat, it was still only logical that certain combination plays weren’t as effective as usual.

After a rather uneventful first half, which ended with a FC Zurich header against the crossbar, the second 45 minutes turned out to be highlight-packed. Mario Gavranovic put FC Zurich 1:0 ahead after a perfectly timed ball by Josip Drmic, but FC Sion managed to equalize just four minutes later. But the home side’s delight was not to last long: Drmic scored his 13th goal of the season just a few seconds later after a pass by Pedro Henrique. But unfortunately, the game now took a turn for the worse as the hosts forced FC Zurich to commit more mistakes than during the first half: Kololli took advantage of the first and scored the equalizer, before Karlen and Veloso put the final score to 2:4 for FC Sion.

During the final minutes of tonight’s encounter, FC Zurich tried everything to get back into the game; however, their combination plays were lacking just too much precision. But after the final whistle the FC Zurich fans still celebrated and cheered on their team and thanked them for a really extraordinary second half of the season.

Some FC Zurich players are now joining their national teams, but most of them are headed for their holidays. And on June 17th already, all of them are expected back in Zurich to prepare for the 2013/2014 season.
