FC Zurich Loses 1:3 to Young Boys Berne

After losing its last Super League game to FC Lucerne (2:3) and being defeated by FC Slovan Liberec (1:2) in the first leg of the 3rd qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League last Thursday, FC Zurich has suffered its third consecutive loss this afternoon against Young Boys Berne (1:3).

FC Zurich had a good start to the game and was the better team in the Letzigrund Stadium. After just a few minutes already and after a well-timed delivery by Pedro Henrique, midfielder Oliver Buff found himself in front of the Young Boys goal, but a Berne defender managed to interfere and successfully prevented Buff from scoring the opening goal. However, while doing so, the Berne defender committed a foul and FC Zurich could have been awarded a penalty. However, the referee’s whistle remained silent. The home side would really have deserved the lead but unfortunately, Alexander Gerndt and Michael Frey soon converted their scoring opportunities and put Young Boys Berne 2:0 in the lead until half-time.

During the second half, the team of head coach Urs Meier showed their true spirit, continued to fight and did not give in just yet. And these efforts were rewarded: in the 60th minute, Alain Nef scored the 1:2 for FC Zurich and put his team back into the game. The home team had a few more opportunities to equalize the score, but the ball didn’t want to go into the net. On the contrary: Yuya Kubo ultimately decided today’s match in favor of Young Boys Berne when he scored the 1:3 in stoppage time.

FC Zurich will be playing its next home game next Thursday already: They will be facing FC Slovan Liberec in the second leg of the 3rd qualifying round of the Europa League.
