FC Zurich Loses Home Game against FC Aarau 1-2

FC Zurich Beats Young Boys Berne 1-0

After the disappointing performance against FC Aarau last Thursday, FC Zurich has shown a convincing reaction this afternoon and celebrated a well-deserved 1-0 victory over Young Boys Berne.

While the home team from Berne dominated the first 10 minutes of the game, FC Zurich soon got into the match a little better and created some promising chances. After Davide Chiumiento had tested Young Boys keeper Wölfli with a shot from wide range, Amine Chermiti had the next opportunity to put the visitors in the lead: fellow Tunisian Yassine Chikhaoui had set him up nicely with a perfectly timed pass into the center of the box, but Chermiti’s shot was deflected off target by a Young Boys Berne defender.

Finally, 50 minutes into the match, FC Zurich’s players got to celebrate their goal: Pedro Henrique played a free kick high into the middle of the box where Chermiti got his head on the ball and put it into the Young Boys net to put his side 1-0 ahead. During the next few minutes, the hosts had several chances to equalize the score; most notably in the 58th minute when Gerndt’s shot from close range was just wide.

After a bit over an hour, Young Boys Berne defender Rochat was given the second yellow card and sent off – but FC Zurich could not take advantage of their superiority. Instead, five minutes before the end of normal time, the Austrian referee showed Zurich’s Davide Chiumiento a straight red card. Apparently, he thought that Chiumiento had pushed his opponent to the ground and punished him for unsportsmanlike conduct; however, the FC Zurich player had not even been near the scene and this sending off was obviously an incorrect decision by the officials.

As a result of these bookings, expulsions and ensuing discussions, there were 7 minutes of added time – during which FC Zurich was again lucky when Von Bergen’s header was just a couple of inches too high and bounced off the crossbar. But this was the last goal-scoring opportunity this afternoon and FC Zurich won the match and the 3 points.

FC Zurich will be playing their next home game against FC Lucerne this Saturday evening.
