FC Zurich was not able to carry the momentum from last week’s 4-1 victory over FC Sion into today’s match: the team of head coach Urs Meier lost the away game versus FC St Gallen 1-2.

The team from Zurich showed a rather disappointing performance during the first 45 minutes, and the home side’s 1-0 lead scored by Goran Karanovic just before the halftime whistle was well-deserved.

On the partially frozen pitch, FC Zurich did not get into the second half of the game very well either, and in the 51st minute, Roberto Rodriguez increased St Gallen’s lead to 2-0 – Rodriguez who had spent his days as a junior footballer with FC Zurich’s youth teams. The host team’s reaction came late but with a vengeance when Mario Gavranovic got control of the ball with his chest after a nice delivery by Marco Schönbächler and slotted the ball home, finally scoring the first FC Zurich goal of the afternoon. It was the 6th goal of the current season for the Swiss international.

But unfortunately, FC Zurich did not succeed in scoring another goal during the last 10 minutes of the game, despite a few promising opportunities – among them a header against the crossbar by Jorge Teixeira – and the score stayed at 2-1 for FC St Gallen until the final whistle.

FC Zurich’s opportunity to take revenge will come very soon, as they’ll be facing FC St Gallen again this Wednesday in the quarter finals of the Swiss cup.
