FC Zurich Wins Swiss Cup Quarter Final against FC St Gallen 1-0

After losing the Super League game against FC St Gallen (1-2) last Sunday, FC Zurich have beaten the same opponent 1-0 in tonight’s Swiss cup quarter final and are through to the semi-finals, where they’ll be facing FC Thun.

FC Zurich had several promising scoring opportunities from kick-off. In the 37th minute, referee Jaccottet awarded FC St Gallen a penalty after a corner and a harmless challenge in the box – a much contested decision, and FC Zurich’s players complained about this rather dubious call. FC St Gallen‘s Alhassane Keita, who played for FC Zurich between 2001 and 2006, tried to beat keeper David Da Costa from the spot, but his imprecise shot was saved.

With 10 minutes left in normal time, Mario Gavranovic moved on goal and was fouled in the box by St Gallen defender Russo – penalty for FC Zurich! This, however, was also a bad decision: Russo had got a touch on the ball before he made contact with his opponent. Avi Rikan stepped up and converted the penalty without any problems, and FC Zurich celebrated a well deserved victory. After the final whistle, coach Urs Meier said that they now really want to qualify for the Swiss cup final. To do so, they’ll need to beat FC Thun at home in the next round.

FC Zurich will be playing their next Super League home game against FC Lausanne-Sport this coming Saturday.
