FC Zurich have drawn local rivals Grasshopper Club 1-1 in the final game in 2013. However, considering the many good scoring opportunities that the home side had created for themselves during the second half, a win would certainly have been possible and well-deserved today.

Only a few minutes into the game, a cross into the box by FC Zurich defender Loris Benito caused some confusion in front of Grasshopper keeper Bürki. Unfortunately, both Asmir Kajevic and Marco Schönbächler could not get a foot on the ball and were not able to tuck it into the net – this chance would remain the best scoring opportunity of the first half.

After the half-time break, FC Zurich really showed a top performance and launched attack after attack on the goal of the visitors – but without success. Instead, it was Grasshopper Club’s Caio who, taking advantage of a mistake in the home team’s defense, opened the score and put his side 0-1 in the lead.

However, this deficit did not deter FC Zurich and did not knock the team off course – quite to the contrary. The home side kept on pushing for the equalizer and continued to create some promising scoring opportunities, without succeeding to convert any of them, though. In the 81st minute, FC Zurich head coach Urs Meier made his last substitution of the afternoon, replacing Marco Schönbächler with striker Franck Etoundi. This turned out to be a perfect move when Etoundi put FC Zurich level just one minute after entering the pitch: After a deep forward pass by Mario Gavranovic, the Cameroonian forward dribbled past Grasshopper keeper Bürki and tied the score at 1-1. The home team now strove for the winner – but unfortunately, they were not successful and today’s encounter ended in a draw.

FC Zurich will be playing their next Super League game against FC Sion at the Letzigrund Stadium on 1 or 2 February 2014.
