FC Zurich Beats FC Sion 1-0

FC Zurich have won the first match of the second half of the 2013/14 season 1-0 against FC Sion tonight thanks to a goal scored by Mario Gavranovic.

From kickoff, FC Zurich took control of the action on the pitch and tried to score the first goal of the evening. A first promising effort by Oliver Buff from long range just 4 minutes in was however denied by FC Sion goalkeeper Vanins.

FC Zurich subsequently had some trouble creating clear-cut opportunities for themselves, and it was only just before the half-time whistle that the home side succeeded in scoring the 1-0: Jorge Teixeira played a long ball behind the FC Sion defense and found Mario Gavranovic – the Swiss international got control of the ball magnificently and beat Sion keeper Vanins to put FC Zurich in the lead.

The visitors from the canton of Valais now put more and more pressure on FC Zurich, forced their opponents into the defensive and granted them only few chances on counterattacks, two of which were missed by Pedro Henrique and Davide Mariani just before the final whistle. The team of head coach Urs Meier therefore had to fight until the very last moment before they got to celebrate their victory and clinched the three points.

FC Zurich will be facing FC St Gallen in their next away game this coming Sunday afternoon.
