FC Zurich have been unstoppable during the second half of the season so far: in their fifth match, the team of head coach Urs Meier beat local rivals Grasshopper Club 3-1 tonight.

After a subdued start, Mario Gavranovic converted the very first scoring opportunity to put his side 1-0 up – his own shot had rebounded off the crossbar and the forward was able to get control of the ball and head it into the net. Just five minutes later, it was Avi Rikan’s turn to double the home team’s lead to 2-0 with a perfectly placed header.

The game then turned into rather heated affair in which referee Sébastien Pache awarded no less than 9 yellow cards (4 to FC Zurich, 5 to Grasshopper Club). The match was ultimately decided on 60 minutes when Gavranovic finished off a magnificent play between Yassine Chikhaoui, Marco Schönbächler and himself to score his second goal of the night.

FC Zurich then were in total control of the action on the pitch and would not let a goal by Grasshopper Club’s Munas Dabbur (3-1) deter them anymore – all in all a well-deserved win for the home team.

With this FC Zurich victory, both local clubs have now won the same number of points this season so far (37) and are ranked 3rd and 4th in the Swiss Super League table.

FC Zurich will be facing Young Boys Berne in their next away game this coming Sunday.
