FC Zurich Suffers 1-0 Defeat against FC Lucerne

After 6 victories in as many matches during the second half of the season so far, FC Zurich have suffered their first defeat in 2014 today. The team of head coach Urs Meier lost their away game against FC Lucerne 1-0 this afternoon.

The only goal of today’s encounter was scored on 33 minutes: After a good scoring opportunity for FC Zurich, the home side from Lucerne took the lead when Dimitar Rangelov got away from the Zurich defense and found himself all alone in front of keeper Da Costa. The Bulgarian kept his cool and converted to put his side 1-0 up.

Just two minutes into the second half, Bozanic even had the chance to double this lead and decide the game, but Da Costa managed to deflect his shot and the ball hit the post.

All in all, it was a well-deserved victory for FC Lucerne as the visitors were not able to create many opportunities for themselves. After this defeat, FC Zurich remain ranked 4th in the Super League table with 40 points.

FC Zurich will be facing FC Basel, the current leaders of the Swiss Super League, in their next home game this coming Sunday afternoon. For this match, FC Zurich won’t be able to rely on Jorge Teixeira, Marco Schönbächler and Yassine Chikhaoui – these three players will be suspended as a result of the yellow cards they have picked up today.
