FC Zurich Lose Away Game against FC Basel 2-4

FC Zurich have lost the away game against FC Basel 4-2 tonight.

The visitors from Zurich had a really unfortunate start to the game. Just 8 minutes in, Basel’s Streller was allowed too much freedom and took the opportunity to play a cross into the middle, where Sio found himself completely unchallenged and scored the 1-0 for the home side.

But FC Zurich showed an immediate reaction: striker Armando Sadiku got rid of his adversary on the edge of the box and fired a powerful shot towards the FC Basel goal – his attempt bounced off the lower edge of the crossbar though.

At the beginning of the second half, FC Zurich needed a few minutes to find their way back into the game and create some good opportunities for themselves. But smack in the middle of this great phase for the visitors, they were caught on the break twice and FC Basel scored two quick goals on counterattacks to increase their lead to 3-0. However, the team of head coach Urs Meier was not to give in just yet, and their response was again very impressive: only one minute after the 3-0, Pedro Henrique smashed the ball home into the upper corner of the net from around 20 meters – Basel keeper Sommer didn’t stand a chance. And on 78 minutes, Yassine Chikhaoui even narrowed the gap to 3-2 after a splendid one-two with Mario Gavranovic.

Unfortunately, a dubious penalty decision and a red card against FC Zurich’s Benito ultimately decided the match during the final minutes: Although David Da Costa managed to save Frei’s penalty, Elneny converted the rebound to put the final score to 4-2.

FC Zurich will be facing the same opponents in the Swiss cup final at the Stade de Suisse in Berne on Easter Monday. Loris Benito will sadly miss this vital game due to the red card he picked up tonight.
