Preparation for the 2014/2015 Season
FC Zurich Beat FC Lausanne-Sport 1-0

2-2 Draw between FC Zurich and FC Aarau

FC Zurich have drawn FC Aarau in their final game of the 2013 /14 Super League season and finish the championship in 5th place. Thanks to their Würth Swiss Cup win in April, the team of head coach Urs Meier will be competing in the Europa League in August.

FC Zurich for once had a good start to the game and managed to take the lead early on. After only three minutes, Pedro Henrique opened the score for the home side when he pulled into the middle and beat Aarau keeper Mall to put FC Zurich 1-0 ahead.

On 12 minutes, Avi Rikan had the opportunity to increase Zurich’s lead to two goals after being set up by Davide Mariani, but his shot was saved by Mall this time. A curled free kick again by Pedro Henrique, the only promising opportunity until the half-time whistle, was aimed directly at the goalkeeper.

The two teams had only just got back onto the pitch for the second 45 minutes when Marco Schönbächler was unlucky as his try was just wide and hit the far side of the post. This shot against the woodwork seemed to be a wake-up call for the visitors from Aarau though, as they now also started to launch some attacks on the FC Zurich goal and pushed for the equalizer – and with quite some success: A curled shot by Lüscher found its way to the back of the net on 56 minutes, equalizing the score.

After FCZ failed to convert several opportunities, the supporters at the Letzigrund Stadium got to celebrate the 2-1 when Marco Schönbächler’s beautifully curled shot went into the top corner just under 10 minutes short of the final whistle – but unfortunately, this wasn’t going to be the game-winning goal today: Burki equalized again for FC Aarau and put the final score to 2-2 just three minutes later.

With this draw, FC Zurich have finished the 2013 / 14 season in 5th place.
