FC Zurich Suffer 4-1 Defeat against FC Basel

FC Zurich have lost their away game against FC Basel 4-1 tonight and have suffered the first defeat of the 2014/15 Super League season.

After a few promising scoring opportunities on both sides of the pitch, it was FC Basel who opened the score on 24 minutes – but this first goal could certainly have been prevented: Zurich keeper Da Costa was not able to catch the ball after a shot from long range by Gonzalez, the ball hit the crossbar and bounced back, landing directly in front of Basel’s Gashi, who somehow managed to push it over the line.

The visitors from Zurich had better fortune after half an hour when Diaz failed to convert from the spot, putting the ball just wide (Yassine Chikhaoui had touched Gashi lightly on the foot in the box and the referee had awarded a penalty). Unfortunately, the home team still scored the 2-0 before the half-time whistle when Zuffi netted in, doubling Basel’s lead on 39 minutes.

But FC Zurich was not going to give in and their morale was rewarded in the 55th minute when Amine Chermiti curled a free kick over the defenders and into the top corner magnificently, reducing Zurich’s deficit to 2-1. The visitors now had their strongest period of the evening and almost got the equalizer, but Chikhaoui’s shot was saved by Basel keeper Vaclik. As FC Zurich kept pushing forward, looking for their second goal of the night, the Basel strikers were given too much space and freedom and decided the match when Kakitani increased the score to 3-1. And just before the final whistle, Delgado put the final result to 4-1.

FC Zurich will be facing FC Lucerne in their next away game on Saturday evening.
