FC Zurich Qualify for the Group Stages of the UEFA Europa League!

FC Zurich have qualified for the group stages of the UEFA Europa League thanks to a convincing performance in yesterday’s second leg play-off match against FC Spartak Trnava! They will be facing Apollon Limassol, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Villareal.

The home side from Zurich started the game from a well-organised and stable defense and did not grant their opponents much freedom in front of their own goal. Approximately 20 minutes in, they also started to create their first promising opportunities of the evening: a shot from 14 meters by Avi Rikan was just narrowly wide (22.), and five minutes later, Amine Chermiti failed to convert a cross Marco Schönbächler.

But in the 48th minute, FC Zurich captain Yassine Chikhaoui scored the well-deserved lead for his team with a precise shot into the left corner of the net. The home team created a few more good opportunities and could have increased their advantage (Chermiti (55./ 58./ 84.), Rikan (58.), Schönbächler (76.) and Etoundi (84.)), but none of those tries were successful. Instead, FC Spartak Trnava managed to equalize on 92 minutes with a deflected shot that caught keeper Da Costa on the wrong foot.

Thanks to this 1-1 draw in their second leg game, FC Zurich have qualified for the group stages of the UEFA Europa League.
