FC Zurich Beat FC Sion 4-1

After beating FC Sion 4-1 in today’s convincing home game, FC Zurich have climbed to the top of the Swiss Super League table after eight rounds.

FC Zurich’s players were looking for victory from kick-off and soon created their first opportunity of the afternoon – but Marco Schönbächler’s header was too short and Deana in the Sion goal was able to save the ball. Just a few minutes later, the home side took the lead nonetheless: Chermiti passed the ball to Davide Chiumiento, who controlled the ball magnificently, kept his cool in front of the Sion goalkeeper and slid the ball through the legs of Deana.

The visitors from the canton of Valais were, however, able to show a swift reaction to this opener and managed to equalize just five minutes later when Vidosic found himself in front of David Da Costa and put the ball past him to put the score to 1-1. But this goal should have been disallowed for offside.

FC Zurich subsequently took over full control of the action on the pitch: Amine Chermiti just missed a cross by Berat Djimsiti, and Gilles Yapi‘s shot from long range a couple of minutes earlier was marginally high.

After the half-time break, FC Zurich accelerated the pace and increased the pressure on the FC Sion goal – and their efforts paid off: Avi Rikan came out on top after a tackle with Lacroix, passed the ball to Chiumiento, and the latter netted in again, scoring his second of the afternoon and putting his team 2-1 up.

This time round, FC Zurich would not allow their opponents to get back into the game again; quite to the contrary: Djimsiti virtually decided the encounter with the 3-1 on 62 minutes, and Chermiti even put the final score to 4-1 in stoppage time.

With this convincing win, FC Zurich have climbed to the top of the Swiss Super League. They will be facing Apollon Limassol in their first UEFA Europa League group stage game in Cyprus on Thursday.
