UEFA Europa League: 1-1 Draw between FC Zurich and Borussia Mönchengladbach

Tonight’s UEFA Europa League group stage game between FC Zurich and Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Letzigrund Stadium has ended in a 1-1 draw. The home side took the lead on 23 minutes thanks to a goal by Etoundi before Mönchengladbach’s Nordtveit managed to equalize the score just two minutes later.

FC Zurich tried to stand up to their opponents from the German Bundesliga from kick-off. And they had a first scoring opportunity when Franck Etoundi set up Amine Chermiti just five minutes in – his shot did not present a problem for Yann Sommer in the Borussia goal though.

It wouldn’t take long, however, before also the visitors got to show themselves in front of the Zurich goal a first time: but to the astonishment of the 18,422 supporters in the stadium, the try by Kruse was wide.

23 minutes in, Etoundi scored the 1-0 and put his team in the lead: after a dribbling past both Hahn and Korb by Marco Schönbächler, the Cameroonian striker got his foot on the ball and pushed it over the line from short range. But this lead wasn’t going to last long: just two minutes later, Nordtveit equalized the score from 25 meters.

After the half-time break, the visitors from Germany eventually accelerated the pace and increased their pressure on the FC Zurich defense. Despite some chances for the home side, Mönchengladbach remained the more dangerous team all in all. But since neither team managed to convert any of their opportunities, the score stayed 1-1 until the final whistle.

With tonight’s draw, FC Zurich have now won one point in their first two UEFA Europa League matches. In their next Super League home game, the team of head coach Urs Meier will be facing FC Vaduz on Sunday afternoon.
