FC Zurich have won their UEFA Europa League group stage home game against Villarreal C.F. 3-2 tonight.

Eight minutes in, FC Zurich’s Cameroonian striker Franck Etoundi had the first promising opportunity of the evening, but his header following a cross by Francisco Rodriguez was just wide. The visitors from Spain, on the other hand, took the lead with their first chance on 19 minutes, when Pina netted in after a corner kick, putting his side 0-1 up. But FC Zurich was able to show an immediate reaction: Marco Schönbächler’s cross found Etoundi in the middle, who was quicker than the Villarreal keeper and headed the ball into the net on 21 minutes.

But it was again only two minutes later that the Spaniards went in front again as Moreno volleyed the ball past David Da Costa in the 23rd minute – 1-2 for Villarreal C.F. FC Zurich, however, were again fast to react. A free-kick by Oliver Buff flew across the visitors’ penalty area and dropped into the far corner. And this was not it just yet for the home team as FC Zurich even took the 3-2 lead after 29 minutes: defender Nico Elvedi passed the ball back to Yassine Chikhaoui, who smashed it home.

Although the team from Villarreal got significantly more possession of the ball during the second half, they were nonetheless not able to create many clear-cut opportunities for themselves. However, when a shot by Rukavina from around 25 meters hit the post, FC Zurich were also lucky that the score remained 3-2 until the final whistle and that they got to celebrate their first win of this season’s Europa League group stage – and a spectacular one at that!

FC Zurich will be facing FC Aarau in their next Super League away game this Sunday afternoon.
