UEFA Europa League: FC Zurich Beat Apollon Limassol 3-1

FC Zurich have won their UEFA Europa League group stage game against Apollon Limassol 3-1 tonight thanks to one goal by Berat Djimsiti and two spot kicks converted by Yassine Chikhaoui.

After a few promising opportunities by Franck Etoundi, Yassine Chikhaoui and Davide Chiumiento and following a mistake in the Zurich defence, the visitors from Cyprus took the lead on 22 minutes when Farley scored the 0-1 from around 20 metres with a shot into the corner of the goalpost.

FC Zurich were, however, able to show an immediate reaction to this deficit and managed to equalise the score after half an hour when Djimsiti finished a nice combination play between Marco Schönbächler and Chiumiento to put his side level 1-1. And things got even better only a few minutes later when Chikhaoui converted a penalty to put the home side 2-1 up.

Not much happened during the opening minutes of the second half and the match was just about decided when Chikhaoui was fouled in the box and awarded another spot kick. FC Zurich’s Tunisian captain was not going to let this opportunity go by unused and put the final score to 3-1.

FC Zurich will be facing German Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach in their final game of the UEFA Europa League group stage on 11 December.
