FC Zurich Suffer 1-2 Defeat against FC Basel

FC Zurich have lost their Super League home game against FC Basel 1-2 tonight – the deciding goal was scored in injury time only.

FC Zurich created several opportunities for themselves from kick-off, all of which were not converted though: Franck Etoundi missed a pass by Marco Schönbächler in front of the Basel goal by the tip of his boot, Davide Chiumiento was not able to trouble Basel keeper Vaclik and tuck the ball away, and Etoundi headed a ball by Yassine Chikhaoui off target by a considerable margin.

And on 41 minutes, FC Basel took the lead: a cross by Safari somehow found its way to Gashi in the middle, who didn’t have any problems to put his side 0-1 in the lead.

FC Zurich had the ultimate opportunity to equalise the score after 70 minutes when Etoundi sidestepped the entire Basel defence with a well-timed chip to Schönbächler, who was then denied by keeper Vaclik. On the opposite end of the pitch, a try Emolo was saved by Zurich keeper David Da Costa.

On 88 minutes, a shot by Etoundi hit Suchy’s hand in the box – and the referee awarded a spot-kick to the home side, an opportunity that Yassine Chikhaoui was not going to miss, equalising the score at 1-1 without any problems. This equalizer triggered Zurich’s final rush for victory, as the home side now finally started to look for the win with determination. Unfortunately, these efforts were not rewarded; quite to the contrary – as Gashi scored the 1-2 for the visitors in injury time, leaving FC Zurich without a point today.

FC Zurich will be facing FC Thun in their next Super League away game this coming Sunday afternoon.
