0-3 Defeat against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach: FC Zurich out of the UEFA Europa League

FC Zurich have lost their final game of the group stages against Mönchengladbach 0-3 and have been eliminated from the UEFA Europa League.

Gladbach had a strong start to the encounter and took control of the game from kick-off. On 16 minutes, Hrgota had a first promising opportunity all alone in front of David Da Costa following a misplaced pass in the Zurich defence, but the Gladbach striker didn’t manage to profit from this mistake. Only seven minutes later, a try by former FC Zurich player Raffael went over the crossbar.

Tough luck for the visitors in the 24th minute: centre-back Ivan Kecojevic had to leave the pitch injured and was substituted by Cédric Brunner, which meant that Zurich’s defence had to be reorganised.

To make matters worse, an unfortunate deflection off Brunner became the perfect pass to Herrmann on 31 minutes, who dribbled around Da Costa and netted in to put the home side 1-0 up.

The game was decided after about an hour when Hrgota finished off a nice combination play between himself and Raffael and doubled Mönchengladbach’s lead to 2-0. And just five minutes went by until again Hrgota lobbed the ball over Da Costa and made the score 3-0. During the last 15 minutes, FC Zurich finally also created some opportunities to at least score a consolation goal, but unfortunately, they were not able to convert any of them.

FC Zurich will be facing FC St Gallen away in their first game of the second phase of the 2014/2015 Super League season on February 7th or 8th 2015.
