FC Zurich have won tonight’s Würth Swiss Cup quarter-final against local rivals Grasshopper Club thanks to a goal by Francisco Rodriguez in extra time and are through to the semi-final.

Franck Etoundi had the first opportunity to open the score just one minute in – but his effort from close range was off target.

In the 21st minute, Grasshopper Club’s Dabbur got away from the Zurich defence and had the opportunity to run on FC Zurich keeper Da Costa, who kept his team in the game with a magnificent reaction to save the ball. Just six minutes later, Berat Djimsiti’s header from four metres out hit GC keeper Davari’s head and was deflected to corner instead of going in.

The game was nearing half-time when Yassine Chikhaoui showed some of his incredible skill and dribbled past Gülen in the box. His finish whizzed past the post though. In the 51st minute, the home side got even closer to scoring the first goal of the night, but a volley by Marco Schönbächler crashed against the outside of the left post.

Since no goals were scored during the remainder of normal time, the game went into extra time. And relief came soon enough for FC Zurich, as youngster Francisco Rodriguez scored the decisive goal in the 96th minute already: Franck Etoundi came out on top in a tackle with Gülen and played a clever pass to Rodriguez in the middle, who chipped the ball over keeper Davari to score the only goal of the night.

FC Zurich will be facing FC Sion in the Würth Swiss Cup semi-final at the Letzigrund Stadium on 8 April 2015.
