FC Zurich Suffer 0-1 Defeat against FC Sion

FC Zurich have suffered a 0-1 defeat in their clash with FC Sion on home turf this afternoon.

Just two minutes were on the clock in today’s encounter, when Sion’s Konaté got away from the Zurich defense and was presented with the first opportunity to open the score. Luckily enough, keeper David Da Costa was able to deny him. Nevertheless, the team of head coach Urs Meier also managed to create several promising chances for themselves during the opening minutes and got really close to taking the lead when Marco Schönbächler played a nice pass to the middle and found Oliver Buff. But unfortunately, the 22-year old midfielder was denied from short range. Since neither team found the back of the net during the first forty-five minutes, the score remained 0-0 until the referee sent the players to the dressing room at half-time.

FC Zurich re-entered the pitch determined and pushed for the 1-0. But unfortunately, the visitors from the canton of Valais launched a quick counterattack, surprising the Zurich defense which had moved up in search of goal and eventually taking the 0-1 lead through Daniel Follonier on 50 minutes. The hosts now gave it their everything to equalize, but their efforts failed again and again. To make matters worse, FC Zurich were unlucky more than once as the referees would not award them a penalty despite several handballs in the Sion box – all in all, they suffered an unfortunate defeat.

FC Zurich will be facing Young Boys Berne in their next away game at the Stade de Suisse this coming Sunday afternoon.
