FC Zurich have lost their home game against FC Lucerne 0-1 tonight – an altogether unfortunate loss.

The home side from Zurich came very close to scoring the opener just five minutes in when a free kick by Mario Gavranovic was deflected by the Lucerne wall and struck the post.

Although FC Zurich subsequently were the more active team for long periods of the evening, they did not manage to create too many clear-cut scoring opportunities for themselves. One of the few occasions that would cause a bit of danger in front of Lucerne keeper Zibung came in the 34th minute after a well-timed and precise through ball by Schneuwly which found again Gavranovic – his low shot was denied by the keeper though.

The visitors from Lucerne got into the match a little better after the half-time break and had several good chances to take the lead, but Brecher in the Zurich goal was able to show some miraculous saves and keep his team in the game.

FC Zurich had another opportunity to put themselves on the scoreboard on 78 minutes: Davide Chiumiento easily dribbled past his opponent, but his shot whizzed by the far post. Misfortune for FC Zurich unfolded with virtually the next Lucerne attack when Puljic headed home a corner to put the visitors 0-1 up – and this goal was going to remain the only one until the final whistle.

FC Zurich will be facing FC Sion in the Würth Swiss Cup semi-final at home on Tuesday, April 7 (kick-off 8.30pm).
