FC Zurich have lost the Würth Swiss Cup semi-final against FC Sion 0-1 tonight and have been eliminated from the competition.

Both teams did look to find the opener from kick-off. Just five minutes in, FC Zurich’s Mario Gavranovic had the first opportunity, but his shot did not worry Vanins in the Sion goal too much. And on 17 minutes, a header by Berat Djimsiti following a corner kick was off target.

FC Sion subsequently remained the more active and more dangerous team however, and their offensive efforts were rewarded just after the half-time break when the FC Zurich defense did not manage to clear the ball from in front of the goal. Konaté was the quickest to react and did not let this chance go by unused, smashing the ball into the net from short range to make the score 0-1 for the visitors.

FC Zurich’s reaction to this deficit was a long time in the coming until the home side had their best chance to equalize the score after 70 minutes: Davide Chiumiento sidestepped his opponent and played a clever back-pass to Kajevic, showing his game overview. But unfortunately, the Montenegrin’s finish from a few yards was too inaccurate to beat the Sion keeper.

The visitors now concentrated on counterattacks and left the possession of the ball to FC Zurich for the most part. But without enough creativity to create any clear-cut scoring opportunities, the home side was not able to equalize until the final whistle. With this 0-1 defeat, FC Zurich have been knocked out of the Würth Swiss Cup.

FC Zurich will be facing FC Basel in their next away game this coming Sunday afternoon.
