FC Zurich have suffered a resounding 1-5 defeat in their away game against Super League leaders FC Basel this afternoon.

After the opener by Gashi, Zurich’s Davide Chiumiento was sent off with a straight red card for a hard foul. But only five minutes later, Gashi suffered the same fate and was sent off after violent conduct against Zurich’s midfielder Avi Rikan.

Today‘s encounter was as good as decided when Basel’s Embolo scored two goals in quick succession – one in injury time of the first half and the second just two minutes into the second forty-five minutes, putting the score to 3-0. After Franck Etoundi got one back to make it 3-1, the game had to be suspended for about 15 minutes as some FC Zurich supporters were throwing petards onto the pitch. When the game resumed, Embolo with his third goal of the afternoon and Djimsiti with an own goal just before the final whistle put the final score to 1-5 for the home side.

FC Zurich will be facing FC St Gallen in their next home game this coming Saturday evening (kick-off 8pm), a match which could turn out to be pointing the way ahead for the qualification for this year’s UEFA Europa League campaign.
