UEFA Europa League Qualification: FC Zurich Suffer 0-1 Defeat against Dinamo Minsk

Last-minute 2-3 Derby Defeat for FC Zurich

FC Zurich have lost the 243rd Zurich derby 2-3 this afternoon due to a goal in injury time.

The game started off badly for the team of head coach Urs Meier: just seven minutes in, Berat Djimsiti afforded his opponent Tarashaj too much space, allowing him to open the score 0-1 with an unsaveable shot.

Grasshopper Club had a few more dangerous opportunities, but FC Zurich was able to show a reaction to this deficit. Mario Gavranovic kept the visitors‘ defense busy and played a clever pass to Amine Chermiti, but unfortunately, the Tunisian’s shot was against the crossbar.

FC Zurich still managed to equalize the score 1-1 on 34 minutes: Gavranovic’s perfect delivery found Armenian midfielder Artem Simonyan, who netted in with a deliberate shot into the far corner.

The home side subsequently tried to take control of the action on the pitch, but it was again local rivals Grasshopper Club who took the lead: Tarashaj found himself all alone in front of Zurich keeper Brecher after a back-heel pass by Caio and converted unchallenged, scoring his second of the afternoon and putting the score to 1-2.

FC Zurich would not give in, though, and equalized yet again on 60 minutes when Oliver Buff beat Grasshopper Club keeper Vasic after a one-two with Gavranovic.

Nevertheless, although the home team kept pushing for the equalizer during the remainder of the game, several instances of lack of concentration in FC Zurich’s defense allowed the visitors the winning goal in injury time: Källström cast off two opponents and played a cross to the center, where Kamberi decided the game with the late 2-3.

FC Zurich will be facing Dinamo Minsk in their second leg of the UEFA Europa League qualifier in Belarus next Thursday (kick-off 7.15pm).
