FC Zurich Suffer 1-3 Defeat to FC Basel

FC Zurich have lost their away game against FC Basel 1-3 this afternoon. With this negative result, the team from Zurich have slipped to the bottom of the Swiss Super League table.

The visitors from Zurich had a bad start to the encounter at St Jakob Park in Basel and were trailing just six minutes in, as Lang opened the score and put the home side 0-1 up. They were able to show a reaction, though, and Ivan Kecojevic, who had been out several months with a lengthy injury, managed to equalize the score (45+5 minutes). This 1-1 was also the score after the first forty-five minutes.

The game was ultimately decided on 85 minutes, when Basel’s Marc Janko converted a spot-kick to put his side 1-3 up; a contested decision by the referee – in the 72nd minute, Shkelzen Gashi had already put the home team in the lead for the second time today (1-2). The referee blew the final whistle a few minutes later and Basel grabbed all three points. Sami Hyypiä, FC Zurich’s new head coach, followed today’s match in the stadium – he will be in charge of FC Zurich’s first team from now on.

The Super League will be suspended this coming weekend as the Swiss national team is playing two Euro 2016 qualifiers. FC Zurich will be facing FC Thun in their next home game on Sunday, September 13th (kick-off 1.45pm).
