FC Zurich Suffer Resounding Defeat against Grasshopper Club
1-1 Draw between FC Zurich and FC Vaduz

First Home Win of the Current Season! FC Zurich-FC Lugano 5-3

After almost six months, FC Zurich have finally won another Super League game at home this afternoon. In a spectacular and dramatic encounter at the Letzigrund Stadium, the home side beat visitors FC Lugano 5-3. This victory was also the first Super League win ever for Zurich head coach Sami Hyypiä.

The first opportunity of the afternoon already led to the opener for the home side by Gilles Yapi on 15 minutes. The midfielder, who had only recently been appointed new captain of FC Zurich’s first team, took advantage of a blunder by the Lugano keeper: Alex Valentini left his goal to clear a ball, but his shot ended up in the feet of Yapi, who netted in from 45 meters out to put his side 1-0 up.

But the visitors from the canton Ticino were not going to give in without a fight and in the 27th minute already, Culina equalized the score for the visitors. And when defender Berat Djimsiti put his colors in front again just three minutes later, Urbano put the side from Lugano level again with a lucky shot from long range (2-2).

The team from Zurich was then able to decide this game thanks to goals by Anto Grgic, Kevin Bua and Mario Gavranovic, who each found the back of the net once to put the final score to 5-3. Finally, the supporters at the Letzigrund Stadium had the opportunity to celebrate another home win. With this victory, FC Zurich have moved up one notch to 9th place in the Super League table and FC Vaduz is now ranked at the bottom.

In their next Super League away game, FC Zurich will be facing local rivals Grasshopper Club for the next Zurich derby this coming Sunday afternoon (kick-off 4pm).
