FC Zurich Beat FC Thun 4-1 and Qualify for Swiss Cup Semi-finals

FC Zurich have won their Würth Swiss Cup quarter-final against FC Thun 4-1 away tonight and are through to the semi-finals, where the team of head coach Sami Hyypiä will be facing FC Sion in March 2016.

FC Thun opened the score on 11 minutes when Wittwer played a cross into the box – and the ball found its way past Zurich keeper Favre, who had been slightly confused by an opposing striker, and ended up in the back of the net, putting the home side 1-0 up.

From the 20th minute, the visitors from Zurich also managed to create their first chances of the evening: Following a cross from the left by Bua, Cameroonian forward Franck Etoundi headed the ball against the top of the crossbar (29). Shortly afterwards, Oliver Buff had the equalizer on his foot after a delivery by Bua, but he did not succeed in putting the ball away – unchallenged, he thrashed it over the bar. Further shots by Gavranovic (33) and Bua (41 and 45) also did not find their way into the net.

Just five minutes into the second half, FC Zurich finally equalized the score when Bua flicked on a cross from the right with his head and found Etoundi in the middle, the latter calmly slotting the ball home to put his side level. And just 7 minutes later, Grgic unleashed a shot from 22 meters, which Thun player Reinmann deflected into his team’s own net – 1-2 for FC Zurich.

The visitors from Zurich then ultimately decided the game in their favor during the final 20 minutes: Vinicius’s corner kick found Zurich defender Kecojevic in the box whose header was saved by the Thun keeper – but Etoundi was the fastest to react and converted the rebound to make the score 1-3 for his side.

And things got even better before the final whistle. Following a well-timed one-two with Buff, Koch scored the 1-4 with an unsaveable shot from 14 meters.

In their Würth Swiss Cup semi-final, FC Zurich will be facing FC Sion away on March 2nd or 3rd 2016; kick-off to be agreed.
