FC Zurich Suffer 0-1 Home Defeat against FC Sion

FC Zurich have lost their first game of the second phase of the Super League championship to FC Sion 0-1 at home this afternoon.

The home side had a good start to today’s game: Just seven minutes in, striker Franck Etoundi had the first opportunity when he tested Vanins in the Sion goal, but the keeper came out on top and cleared to corner. The following corner kick by Oliver Buff into the middle of the box found Etoundi again, but his effort was just wide.

After about 20 minutes, the visitors also began to create more chances: Salatic’s shot from long range did not pose much of a thread to Favre in the Zurich goal, but the ball got deflected by defender Kecojevic and almost caught the keeper on the wrong foot.

On 50 minutes, FC Sion’s Pa Modou saw his second yellow card of the afternoon following a foul on Etoundi and was sent off. The resulting free kick from approximately 20 meters out was taken by Buff, but the ball was marginally off target. Unfortunately, the home team was not able to take advantage of their numerical superiority on the pitch. Instead, Konaté scored the 0-1 on 68 minutes, putting the visitors in the lead.

When Zurich defender Koch was also sent off after his second yellow card in the 78th minute, today‘s game was just about decided as the home side was not able to show a reaction to this deficit.

With this defeat, the team of head coach Sami Hyypiä has slipped to the bottom of the Super League table. In their next match, FC Zurich will be facing FC Lucerne away on Sunday afternoon, February 14th (kick-off 4pm).
