0-0 Draw between FC Zurich and FC Lugano

Tonight’s encounter between FC Zurich and FC Lugano at the Stadio Cornaredo has ended in a 0-0 draw – despite several promising and some clear-cut chances for the visitors.

Even though FC Zurich had considerably more ball possession than their opponents during the opening minutes, they were initially not able to cash in on this advantage to create dangerous situations in FC Lugano’s penalty area. Alexander Kerzhakov, FC Zurich’s Russian striker, had the first promising scoring opportunity on 38 minutes following a delivery by Koch, but his header was marginally off target. Just before the half-time break, the visitors were forced to make their first substitution due to an injury of Franck Etoundi. The Cameroonian striker suffered a dislocation of his right shoulder and had to come off. He will be out of action for three to four weeks.

After the break, FC Zurich increased the pace and created their next chance just three minutes into the second half; but unfortunately, Kevin Bua’s effort from an excellent position was aimed too high and went over the crossbar. Only seven minutes later, Kerzhakov’s through ball found Oliver Buff all alone in front of the Lugano goal, but the home side’s keeper reacted magnificently and was able to save his shot. In the 76th minute, it was again Buff who did not manage to complete a speedy attack via Kerzhakov and Bua.

FC Lugano, on the other hand, had their best chance to grab the three points on 85 minutes, but keeper Favre was able to save Pusic’s shot. Leonardo Sánchez, FC Zurich’s newly signed Argentine center back, then had the last opportunity of the evening, but his powerful header following a corner kick by Buff was not accurate enough and the score remained 0-0 until the final whistle.

After this draw, FC Zurich are still ranked eighth in the Super League table with 21 points. They will be facing Young Boys Berne at home this coming Saturday evening, February 27th (kick-off 8pm).
