FC Zurich have claimed one point in their Super League match against FC Basel this afternoon. Unfortunately, despite their numerical superiority on the pitch, the team of head coach Sami Hyypiä was not able to hang on to a two-goal advantage during the final minutes of the encounter.

During the first forty-five minutes, the visitors from Zurich focused on their disciplined work in defense. Consequently, although the home side had more ball possession, they did not manage to create any dangerous opportunities in front of the Zurich goal.

Following the first FC Zurich corner of the afternoon after about an hour of play and an aerial duel between Kecojevic and Suchy, the ball dropped to the ground in front of Alexander Kerzhakov, who smashed the ball into the back of the net with a sideways scissor-kick, putting his side 1-0 up.

Ten minutes later, a precise center to the middle of the penalty area by Koch found Kevin Bua, who came out on top of defenders Suchy and Samuel and doubled FC Zurich’s lead to 2-0 with a precise header into the corner of the net.

Approximately five minutes later, Basel defender Safari was sent off for his professional foul on Bua just short of the box.

But FC Basel gained new hope on 82 minutes when the referee awarded them a dubious penalty after a foul by Nef on Embolo – a highly contested decision. Delgado converted this opportunity, reducing his side’s deficit to one goal. And just two minutes later, Bjarnason took advantage of some confusion in the Zurich defense and put Basel level 2-2, which ultimately turned out to be the final score.

Next Saturday, April 16th, FC Zurich will be facing FC Lucerne at home (kick-off 8pm).
