FC Zurich Suffer 0-1 Home Defeat against FC Lucerne

Following victories against FC Vaduz (3-0) and FC St Gallen (4-0) and a draw with FC Basel (2-2), FC Zurich have unfortunately suffered a defeat in their Super League game tonight. In front of 8,146 spectators at the Letzigrund Stadium, the team of head coach Sami Hyypiä lost their home game against FC Lucerne 0-1.

The hosts from Zurich, who had to do without Leonardo Sanchez and Gilles Yapi due to injury, had a promising start to this encounter and put their opponents under pressure from kick-off. FC Lucerne, however, were able to show a reaction when a shot by Jamir Hyka on 15 minutes smashed against the post. At the other end of the pitch, a magnificent free-kick by Alexander Kerzhakov was only a few centimeters off target.

Just after the half-time break, it was Marco Schneuwly though who scored the only goal of the evening after some confusion in the Zurich defense between keeper Yanick Brecher and defender Cédric Brunner. As a result, the Lucerne striker was completely unmarked and netted in without any problems.

FC Zurich struggled to create clear-cut opportunities for themselves. This changed towards the end of the game when both Kerzhakov as well as Aldin Turkes, who had come on in the 84th minute, were denied by Lucerne keeper David Zibung.

After the final whistle, Philippe Koch commented today’s result as follows: “This defeat is very painful. We were not able to confirm our upward trend tonight.“

For their next home game – this Tuesday evening, April 19th – FC Zurich will be welcoming local rivals Grasshopper Club for the Zurich derby (kick-off 7.45pm).
