1-1 Draw between FC Zurich and Local Rivals Grasshopper Club

In the fourth Zurich derby of the current season, FC Zurich have finally won their first point against local rivals Grasshopper Club tonight. An exciting game at the Letzigrund Stadium in front of 10,218 spectators ended in a 1-1 draw, the two teams sharing the points.

The team of head coach Sami Hyypiä, who had to do without several important players due to injuries, had a good start to the game, put their adversaries under pressure from the very first and won most tacklings during the first forty-five minutes. Following a header by Grasshopper Club defender Alban Pnishi which bounced off the post, the home team opened the score on 38 minutes: Russian striker Alexander Kerzhakov was fouled in the box and the referee awarded a penalty. 19-year-old Anto Grgic converted from the spot, putting his side 1-0 in front – it was his 4th goal of the current season.

After the half-time break, FC Zurich increasingly focused on their work in defense to secure all three points. But out of nowhere, Caio equalized the score in the 71st minute. FC Zurich now struggled to hang on to the one point until the final whistle, and the visitors had more ball possession. But it was nonetheless Grgic who got closest to scoring the winner on 89 minutes when his shot from 25 meters hit the post.

Philippe Koch summarized the game as follows: „We were the better side during the first half but unfortunately, we were not able to confirm our convincing performance during the second forty-five minutes. However, in the end, winning one point is better than leaving empty-handed.”

In their next Super League away game, FC Zurich will be facing Young Boys Berne at the Stade de Suisse next Sunday afternoon, April 24th (kick-off 1.45pm).
