FC Zurich with Late 2-3 Defeat against FC Basel

FC Zurich have narrowly lost their home game against FC Basel 2-3 tonight.

On 10 minutes, Basel’s Delgado opened the score with a free kick from the corner of the penalty area, making it 1-0 for the visitors. But just six minutes later, Kevin Bua fought his way through on the left and played a clever ball to Philippe Koch, who equalized the score from ten meters. Subsequently, keeper Brecher managed to deny two dangerous scoring opportunities by Callà (shot from long range) and Embolo (header). The home team also had their opportunities, however: Following a perfectly timed combination play between Buff, Kerzhakov and Koch, Basel’s Aliji almost put the ball into his own net. And finally, two powerful shots from about 20 meters by Buff were just off target.

After the half-time break, Basel’s Callà put his side in the lead again with a lob ball over Zurich keeper Brecher. But luckily, it again took just six minutes for FC Zurich to equalize the score at 2-2 by means of Buff’s magnificent free kick into the corner of the net from 17 meters.

Unfortunately, when the two teams seemed to be heading for a justified draw – the 87th minute arrived: following an unnecessary foul by keeper Brecher outside the five-yard box, Basel were awarded a penalty, which Embolo converted to put the final score to 2-3 for the visitors.
On Wednesday evening, FC Zurich will be facing FC Lugano in their next home game, which might prove crucial in their struggle for Super League survival (kick-off 8pm).
