FC Zurich has suffered a severe setback in their fight for survival in the Super League: The team of head coach Sami Hyypiä has lost their crucial home game against FC Lugano 0-4 tonight.

Just 12 minutes in, striker Alexander Kerzhakov had his first opportunity to open the score – however, his effort was saved by Lugano keeper Mirko Salvi, who then also managed to deny a header by the Russian 10 minutes later. Approximately 20 minutes in, the visitors came into the game better and better, though, and had several promising chances to score the first goal of the evening. FC Zurich could certainly consider themselves lucky with the 0-0 as the referee blew the half-time whistle.

After the break, the home side was unfortunately still not able to show any reaction and remained rather passive. Consequently, what was bound to happen happened on 50 minutes when Ezgjan Alioski opened the score and put FC Lugano 1-0 in front. It wasn’t until the 70th minute that FC Zurich finally began to create several good chances to equalize the score, all of which were saved by the visitors’ keeper, though.

Tonight’s encounter was then ultimately decided on 87 minutes when Lugano’s Mattia Bottani doubled his team’s advantage to 2-0. This goal completely demoralized the FC Zurich players and as a result, they conceded two more goals in injury time (one by Bottani and another by Alioski), which put the final score to 0-4.

After this defeat and with three games remaining until the end of the season, FC Zurich has slipped to the bottom of the Super League table. They will be facing FC St. Gallen in their next away game on Whit Monday (kick-off 4pm).
