Thanks to a 1-0 victory against FC Lugano in the Würth Swiss Cup final in front of 21,500 spectators at the Letzigrund Stadium this afternoon, FC Zurich got to celebrate their 9th Swiss Cup title in the club’s history. Although the joy among a considerable part of their supporters was marred by the club’s recent relegation to the Challenge League, one should certainly be pleased about this title: Their successful cup campaign grants FC Zurich direct qualification for the group stages of the 2016/2017 Europa League season.

The game against FC Lugano was a very even match, and the FC Zurich players had to fight hard for their victory. On 33 minutes, the score was still 0-0, keeper Anthony Favre showed a remarkable save when he denied FC Lugano’s Mattia Bottani from the spot – a crucial save for FC Zurich.

Just before the half-time whistle, Senegalese midfielder Sangoné Sarr scored his first goal for the club from close range (41st minute), and this goal was going to decide this final. During the second half, Zurich striker Alexander Kerzhakov (57th minute) and Lugano’s Anastasios Donis (62nd minute) both saw their shots bounce off the post, and the score remained 1-0 until the final whistle.

“This cup win is no recompense for our relegation, but it might be the beginning of a brighter future”, said FC Zurich head coach Uli Forte after the game.
