FC Zurich have won their first game of the 2016-2017 Challenge League season against FC Winterthur 2-0 at the Letzigrund Stadium tonight. The two goals were scored by Rodriguez and Sadiku.

In front of a considerable crowd of 13,704 fans (more than double the number of spectators present at Grasshoppers‘ home game the day before), the home side had the better beginning to the match and during the first half hour, all of the action on the pitch took place in the opponents‘ half. As a result, FC Zurich opened the score just 12 minutes in when Rodriguez converted a header by Winter in front of the goal, putting his side 1-0 up.

Subsequently, FC Zurich immediately tried to increase their lead and created several promising scoring opportunities for themselves, namely by Sadiku, Buff, Sarr and Winter, all of which were, however, not crowned with success. And in the 66th minute, a low shot by Buff whizzed past the post – just.

Tonight‘s game was then ultimately decided on 82 minutes when Sadiku headed home a delivery by Winter, making the final score 2-0 for FC Zurich.

FC Zurich will be facing FC Wil away next Saturday evening, July 30th (kick-off 5.45pm).
