0:0 draw between FC Zurich and Steaua Bucharest
The Europa League game between FC Zurich and Steaua Bucharest at the Letzigrund Stadium has ended in a goalless draw tonight.
FC Zurich were mostly one step behind their opponents during the opening few minutes of the encounter. But on 21 minutes, a pass by a Steaua defender got slightly deflected by the referee, which gave the home side their first scoring opportunity of the evening: Buff was the fastest to react. He played the ball to Rodriguez, but his shot whizzed past the back post.
On the following counterattack, FC Zurich found their goal under imminent threat when Popa’s cross found his completely unmarked teammate William in the middle of the box, but luckily enough for the home team, he hoofed the ball way over the crossbar.
Shortly after the half-time break, a goal kick by Vanins rebounded off the foot of a Steaua striker and rolled toward the abandoned Zurich goal. Fortunately, the keeper of Latvia’s national team was able to resolve this sticky situation.
Another well-timed cross in front of the goal by Rodriguez on 63 minutes found Cavusevic in the middle, but his header did not bother the keeper too much.
Both teams then mostly neutralized each other. A header by Koné after 85 minutes and a shot from long range by Rodriguez were the only dangerous opportunities; consequently, the game remained scoreless.
On Sunday, 6 November, FC Zurich will be facing FC Aarau at the Letzigrund Stadium (kick-off 3pm).
