FC Zurich suffer 0-1 defeat against FC Basel
FC Zurich have lost their away game against FC Basel 0-1 tonight.
The home side had four opportunities by Oberlin and Lang early on in the game, but fortunately, the FC Zurich defenders were able to stop these attacks in time. The visitors from Zurich, on the other hand, had difficulty organizing their offense.
Nevertheless, they still had three goal-scoring opportunities between the 24th and 27th minute: Twice, Koné almost benefitted from a misunderstanding between Basel’s Suchy and keeper Vaclik and once, Dwamena slipped at the crucial moment.
During the first 15 minutes of the second half, FC Zurich finally played more offensively and had two more promising chances. First, a shot by Dwamena was just one meter wide and whizzed past the post. Then, Dwamena’s pass found Frey in front of the Basel goal, but his shot was aimed too high and the ball flew over the crossbar – what a massive opportunity! Instead, it was FC Basel who took the lead on 62 minutes when, following a corner kick, Suchy pushed Zurich defender Nef to the ground in the box unpunished and the ball found its way to Oberlin; the Basel striker had no trouble scoring the 1-0 for the home side.
FC Zurich were not really able to react to this deficit, while FC Basel took control of the game and, consequently, FC Zurich suffered their first defeat of the season.
Next Sunday afternoon, 1 October 2017, FC Zurich will be facing FC Lugano at the Letzigrund Stadium (kick-off 4pm).
