FC Zurich suffer 0-2 home defeat against FC Wil
FC Zurich have lost their home game at the Letzigrund Stadium against FC Wil 0-2 tonight. Already before kick-off, it was clear that FC Zurich would get promoted to the Super League next season. Nonetheless, more than 10,000 spectators found their way to the Letzigrund Stadium on this rather chilly Saturday evening.
After just a few seconds, it looked like the home team would get their first opportunity to cheer when striker Raphael Dwamena found himself all alone in front of Wil keeper Steven Deana; but unfortunately, the keeper managed to deny FC Zurich’s Ghanaian striker the opener. Following this first exciting moment of the game, the action on the pitch did not continue along the same lines and there were only few scoring opportunities at either end.
In the 55th minute, the visitors from Wil took the lead when Silvano Schäppi scored the 0-1 for his side. And just nine minutes later, Mattia Bottani doubled FC Wil’s advantage to 2-0. FC Zurich – with several junior players in tonight’s line-up – did react to this deficit; however, they didn’t manage to score a goal until the final whistle and had to leave the pitch defeated for the first time at home this season.
Despite this disappointing performance, the fans celebrated the team for their promotion to the Super League. Zurich coach Uli Forte said: "After we got promoted last Thursday, all the pressure was off and we lost the tension a little bit."
Next Saturday evening, 27 May 2017, FC Zurich will be facing in-form FC Schaffhausen away (kick-off 7pm).
