FC Zurich suffer 1:2 defeat in Geneva
FC Zurich have lost their first game of the second half of the season 1:2 against Servette FC tonight. It was their first defeat of this season’s campaign.
The home side had the better start to the match and recorded a first promising opportunity through Nsame. About ten minutes in, FC Zurich took more and more control of the action on the pitch, but without actually creating many chances for themselves.
On 35 minutes, the visitors should have opened the score though: Following a nice combination play between Buff and Rodriguez, the ball found Cavusevic, who unfortunately didn’t manage to tuck the ball away in the abandoned Servette goal.
The game didn’t change much throughout the opening minutes of the second half as both teams neutralized each other in midfield and concentrated their efforts on their defense.
Consequently, it was only in the 65th minute that Sauthier put the home side 1:0 in front with a shot from long range. Just seven minutes later, Vitkieviez should even have doubled this lead to 2:0, but luckily enough for the visitors from Zurich, his shot bounced off the crossbar.
FC Zurich were unfortunately not able to show a reaction to this deficit, quite to the contrary: When Nsame appeared completely unmarked in front of Vanins, the Zurich keeper’s last resort was to stop the Servette striker by fouling him in the box. Nsame converted the penalty to put the score to 2:0 in the 83rd minute. Although FC Zurich managed to get one goal back when Nef scored from a Marchesano free-kick, they couldn’t turn the game around and FC Zurich suffered a 1:2 defeat.
Next Monday evening, 13 February 2017, FC Zurich will be facing Neuchâtel Xamax at home, currently ranked second in the league (kick-off 7.45pm).
