FC Zurich beat local rivals Grasshopper Club 2-0 in 247th Zurich derby
FC Zurich have started the 2017/18 Super League season with a convincing performance. In front of 20,000 spectators at the Letzigrund Stadium, the team of head coach Uli Forte beat local rivals Grasshopper Club 2-0.
The FC Zurich players showed from kick-off that they were ready for this 247th Zurich derby. In the 23rd minute, Raphael Dwamena scored his first-ever Super League goal following some nice combination play: Adrian Winter provided the assist with a perfect cross, and Dwamena headed the ball home to give his side the 1-0 lead.
FC Zurich continued to dominate the action on the pitch also during the second half. However, they didn’t score the 2-0 just yet on 62 minutes since new signing Michael Frey’s spot kick was saved by Grasshopper keeper Heinz Lindner. But in the 83rd minute, it was ultimately Dwamena who scored his second goal of the afternoon with a magnificent shot from long range, putting the final score to 2-0 in favor of the visitors. Obviously, joy was immense among the FC Zurich supporters. After the final whistle, match-winner Dwamena said: “God is the most important thing in my life. He gives me everything, anything is possible with him. He gave me these two goals today.”
Next Sunday afternoon, July 30th, FC Zurich will be facing FC Thun at home in the Letzigrund Stadium in their second match of the season (kick-off 4pm).
