FC Zurich win the Zurich derby against local rivals Grasshopper Club 2-0
FC Zurich have won the first Zurich derby of the 2018/2019 season against local rivals Grasshopper Club 2-0.
During the opening minutes of today’s game, the players of both FC Zurich and Grasshopper Club concentrated on their work in defense. But after approximately ten minutes, Nigerian striker Odey went to the ground in the box following a slight contact with his opponent; however, the referee’s whistle remained silent. And just one minute later, Rüegg played a dangerous cross in front of the Grasshopper goal, but neither Odey nor Marco Schönbächler managed to get a foot on the ball to deflect it towards goal.
Just before the end of the first 45 minutes, Schönbächler had the best opportunity of the game so far, but Grasshopper Club keeper Heinz Lindner just managed to keep out his volley shot and deny FC Zurich the lead.
The visitors then got off to a dream start to the second half when a magnificent volley shot on the turn by Adrian Winter following a free-kick by Antonio Marchesano in the 47 th minute found the back of the net to put FC Zurich 1-0 in front. And only five minutes later, Schönbächler almost scored the 2-0 for FC Zurich, but his shot bounced off the post.
In the 62nd minute and following a nice combination play between Toni Domgjoni and Kevin Rüegg, the ball found the foot of Odey, who doubled FC Zurich’s lead to 2-0 with a powerful shot.
Next Sunday afternoon, 5 August 2018, FC Zurich will be facing reigning champions Young Boys Berne away (kick-off 4pm).
