FC Zurich beat FC Thun 2-1
FC Zurich have beat FC Thun 2-1 this afternoon and have won their first game of the new season.
After an evenly balanced opening minutes of today’s game, FC Zurich had several promising scoring opportunities and opened the score just 16 minutes in: Marco Schönbächler was the fastest to react and pick up a pass from Izer Aliu, chipping the ball over Thun keeper Guillaume Faivre and putting the home side 1-0 in front.
FC Zurich now dominated and more or less took control of the game, creating further chances for Khelifi, whose effort went over the crossbar, and Michael Frey, who missed a cross by Mirlind Kryeziu in front of the FC Thun goal by just a few inches.
After the half-time break, the visitors from the Bernese Oberland then had several opportunities to equalize the score, but they failed to make use of any of them – to the contrary: In the 62 nd minute, FC Zurich doubled their lead when Adrian Winter scored the 2-0. The FC Thun players did not give up though and got very close to their first goal of the afternoon when the ball crashed against the crossbar after a header by Dennis Hediger in the 65 th minute. In the 87 th minute, the visitors from Thun got one back when Dejan Sorgic took advantage of a misunderstanding in the Zurich defense and scored the 1-2 for his side. FC Zurich managed to cling to their narrow lead until the final whistle – also thanks to defender Alain Nef who cleared the ball off the line in the 94 th minute, securing FC Zurich the three points tonight.
Next Saturday evening, 28 July 2018, FC Zurich will be facing local rivals Grasshopper Club Zurich away in the Zurich derby (kick-off 7pm).
